The German artist Caspar Netscher began his training at an early age in Arnhem, under the direction of the still life and portrait painter Hendrik Coster. He completed his training in Deventer with Gerard ter Borch. This painting is a version of the original painting on copper by Netscher, which was in the collection at Dresden that was lost in 1945. The original work was highly admired and many copies were made, including this one and another which is now in the Royal Collection at Buckingham Palace.
